DAL EAST (CN)

DAL EAST was born in Beijing, China in 1984 and is currently based in Cape Town, South Africa.
He studied sculpture at the Institute of Fine Arts and began creating street art at 2004 under the alias DAL. He is inspired by the way the material world revolves, how the spiritual world unfolds, life’s emotions and the infinite space around us. He uses different mediums, methods, disciplines and spaces to create his works but is known primarily for his large scale street murals.

After ceremoniously abandoning his Sculpture degree, this education (no matter how incomplete) serves as a serious starting point for understanding the 3 dimensionality of his works. In his figure’s bodies, often unfurling and twisting together only to break apart again, one cannot help but feel the spiritual connection in the spaces he utilizes for his pieces. He deals with abandonment, evolution, emotions, materialistic tendencies and the infinite spaces in the world so seamlessly that one almost misses the absolute madness of the details existing in his work.

With ink, brush and spray, DAL starts an incredible journey into the possibilities of art, giving shape and substance firstly to feelings, around which bodies are brought to life.
In his works we can find a gesture that seems a deliberately continuous path. The technique of the sketch becomes the matrix through which DAL is developing a new visual alphabet.

His murals can be found in cities around the world including the U.S., Switzerland, Namibia, France, Israel, Australia and China.
