NUART PRESENTS...AT CRYSTAL SHIP FESTIVAL, BELGIUM

Nuart Festival was invited by The Crystal Ship in Ostend, Belgium, to curate two artists into their inaugural festival in April 2016.

Nuart presented Biancoshock (IT) and Isaac Cordal (ES) with each artist undertaking a 4 day residency on the streets of Ostend. Both were given the freedom of the city to explore and make work in the public space, representing the DIY aspect of the street art movement.

Nuart curator Martyn Reed said this about Biancoshock's participation in the project:

"Biancoshock is without a doubt one of the world's leading urban interventionists working today. With a sharp eye for the ridiculous alongside propagating hard hitting socio-cultural commentary, his work embodies all that Nuart strive to create a platform for. His work continues, as far as we are concerned, street art's authentic lineage from the likes of John Fekner and Jenny Holzer to Darius and Downey and Harmen De Hoop: artists who operate outside of traditional gallery systems and who have consistently used the streets to challenge the cultural hegemony.

When The Crystal Ship Festival reached out with an invitation to participate in curating an artist into their programme that represented Nuart’s core values, then Biancoshock was one of a very few obvious choices. He’s an artist capable of providing the cultural glitches required to see the city and life anew. Like Nuart, his work embodies aspects of both Situationism and Dada and I’m sure he would identify with its founder Hugo Ball when he stated, "For us, art is not an end in itself... but an opportunity for the true perception and criticism of the times we live in”.

Alongside Biancoshock and Isaac Cordal, The Crystal Ship Festival included work from previous Nuart Festival guests and favorites Ella & Pitr, Faith 47, Pixelpancho and Roa.
