Nuart 2009
It was artist Chris Stain’s participation in Nuart 08 that focussed our attention back onto the community based aspect of unsanctioned public artworks and in particular the development of this scene in Brooklyn. Chris Stain, Swoon, Just Seeds and the various public mural projects in New York echo earlier movements in resistance through art, particularly in post-revolutionary Mexico and Chicano barrios.
This coming together of the self taught, the house painter, the sign writer, college art students and graffiti writers to create a “people’s art” that explores themes of community and citizens rights is perhaps one of the least promoted aspects of the burgeoning street art scene, but one which embodies the core values of placing work on the streets for free.
