20 years ago, Numusic, initially called The West Coast Festival of Numusic, was established in Stavanger with a council grant of just 10 000kr. Over 2 nights in September the likes of Røyksopp, Iceland’s Gus Gus, Annie, Bjørn Torske and numerous other Nordic luminaries packed Sting Nattklubb for what would become a pivotal moment in Scandinavian club cultural history. Over the next 15 years, the festival would expand city-wide and become regarded as one of the worlds leading festivals dedicated to the promotion of electronic music. It would go on to host some of the worlds pioneering electronic music composers, from Arne Nordheim to Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Henry to Steve Reich. Underground club culture featured prominently, the festival always having one foot planted firmly on the dancefloor. It became a dynamic incubator and platform for both the first and second wave of Nordic acts, acts that are now regarded as foundational to the scene, Biosphere, Mental Overdrive, Bjørn Torske, Røyksopp, Todd Terje, Prins Thomas and Lindstrøm to name a few. The festival became renowned for championing those more radical acts in Detroit techno, Underground Resistance with an 8 hour live set, Jeff Mills with Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Carl Craig and Planet E alongside Mad Mike Banks. Sonic experiments from Lee “Scratch” Perry and The Orb, Mad Professor and Nightmares on Wax, Warp Records label showcases, DFA, the electroclash of Peaches, founder members of Kraftwerk, Neu!, Faust, Olafar Arnolds, Kim Gordon, The Fall and the madness of Altern 8, and who can forget Datarock the musical at the new concert house, a fitting tribute to a band that had over the years, become the Numusic “inhouse band”. This is just a tiny fraction of a program that contained up to 30 acts a year for 15 years, influencing all who were drawn into its orbit whilst generating musical memories that would last a lifetime.

For one night only, Numusic returns to its spiritual home at Tou, a venue part founded by the Numusic and Nuart family back in 2000. And what better way to celebrate than paying tribute to artists from Tromsø, the city that pumps the blood through the heart of the Norwegian electronic music scene. We present two artists who bookend a culture spanning over 20 years. Norwegian Techno Godfather Mental Overdrive with an exclusive live set will be joined by Tromsø’s latest house sensation, Dj Ra-Shidi, a young artist currently making waves in Oslo. We’ll be adding a very special Nu flavour to the mix with visuals from the Nu team and Vj Lupo, the go to VJ for all things techno whilst throwing a few other tricks and treats into the night.

This is a one off event to re-live some of those early day highlights whilst offering an opportunity for newcomers tired of commercial EDM to experience a genuine underground house night. We hope you’ll join us for the ride.

Together with Biosphere and Bjørn Torske, Mental Overdrive is the first wave of pioneers within Norwegian electronic music. This was also thoroughly documented in the movie, Northern Disco Lights: The Rise and Rise of Norwegian Dance Music (2016), which conveys the unique history of how Norwegian electronica arose in the 90’s.

Behind the name we find Per Martinsen, also called techno grandpa, with a vast amount of releases through three decades. He has worked with R&S, SSR, Discfunction, Smalltown Supersound, Airtight, Music Man, Virgin, Full Pupp og his own Love OD Communications. In 2014 he received a Spellemann for the album, «Everything Is Connected». In 2017, Mental Overdrive released not one, but two albums, «Hardware» through the acknowledget, Bergen based techno-crew Ploink, followed by an «Epilouge» på Prins Thomas’ Rett i Fletta.

Mental Overdrive is also known for the many legendary concerts held around the world. Currently his live performances consist of a mix between live improvisation on hardware and a computer and live visuals.

Olivia Ra-Shidi has gone from learning to mix to playing a stage at Insomnia festival in less than eighteen months. A precocious talent, the young Ra-Shidi has an innate musical ability, fusing organic contrapuntal rhythms with vintage synthesisers in exotic mixes forged from chimerical musical landscapes.

She’s a resident and a booker for Circa and Storgate Camping (Oslo Camping’s northern counterpart) in Tromsø. Between booking these venues and playing, Ra-Shidi has become a dominant force in the arctic city as one of the next generation of DJs breaking through from Norway’s first electronic music city, where Bjørn Torske, Mental Overdrive, Biosphere and Rune Lindbæk first staked their claim.

She is an empathetic improvising perfectionist, resulting in eclectic sets based on feeling rather than planning and with smooth and precise mixing and buildups forging ethnic drums with old school gritty noise covering genres from deep house to techno and electro.

For the moment Ra-shidi is happy biding her time as a DJ, but she will almost definitely add producer in the near future to her credentials. She’s a rising star, not only in Tromsø, but in the rest of Norway too, and one to certainly look out for in the future.

Eirik Norford Bøe aka VJ Lupo, is a visual artist, body painter, and photographer originally from Stavanger. He holds a degree from the London College of Printing. Over the last few years, he has established himself as a cutting edge VJ working in both the UK and Norwegian club scenes. His impressive graphics has secured him residencies at Numusic, Fuck Art, Let’s Dance and from 2017 he’s been techno festival Ploink’s resident VJ .
