ESCIF
According to Escif the most important attribute of graffiti is its presence on the street. One cannot experience graffiti in museums, galleries or magazines – it can only exist in its natural environment – the street. Escif’s work, though categorized as street art, is something more, it’s a development of graffiti that at this point in time cannot be properly understood. The context and relationship between the painting and urban space is all, and though we may take meaning from the imagery, this is just part of the overall story. As Escif says, “Be the wall”. Existential graffiti ? maybe..
“as a necessary symptom of life in contemporary cities. A painted wall represents a way of using the city that is not thought about socially (though it becomes more so every day). It seems very interesting to me that people that live in a city do not settle for using it according to imposed rules; they invent new ways of utilizing it”
