OCEAN (NU)ART
To kick off the Nuart festival 2014 internationally renowned street artist Mariusz Waras (M-City) took the 'Ocean Art' - a 90 m long offshore supply vessel - as a massive floating canvas, covering 200 m2 of it's bow. The project was a collaboration between Nuart and the owner Atlantic Offshore, and took place in the public space of the harbour during ONS. Highlighting Stavanger as a leading city within the European street art landscape and an offshore capital, M-City combined jagged mountain tops and mechanical wheels that link the ship to it's base in Western Norway and it's foundation on the union between nature and technology.
As the ship was constructed in Gdansk shipyard (home to the Solidarity movement), and close to M-City's native town Gdynia in Poland, the project also cements cultural links between the two countries. M-City has returned several times to apply his imagined cityscapes to Stavanger's walls – most recently the airport's control tower - taking inspiration from the factories, chimneys, cranes, hydroelectric plants, and other mechanized beasts that dominated his childhood.
