THE WORLD'S LARGEST OUTDOOR MURAL
Nuart Festival, Block Berge Bygg and Ella & Pitr created the world’s largest outdoor mural in Klepp, Rogaland as part of Nuart's 15th Anniversary celebrations.
The finished mural is visible from planes flying into and out of Stavanger's Sola airport and has quickly become a new international landmark with Time magazine, The Independent, Huffington Post and Norwegian media exposing the story to an audience of up to 20 million people.
Lilith and Olaf depicts a woman curled up on the rooftop with a small figure falling from her fingers. The figure is King Olaf I of Norway, who ruled the country from 995-1000. Various sources cite his birthplace as an islet in Frøylandsvatnet, a lake just metres from Block Berge Bygg’s 21,000m2 buidling.
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
This ambitious world-record attempt marks the beginning of a three-year creative partnership between Nuart and construction company Block Berge Bygg, which will see the two organisations produce arts-based projects in Stavanger and the surrounding Rogaland region.
The partnership is the first of it’s kind between a not-for-profit arts organisation and private sector company in Norway, and one which it’s hoped will encourage others in the county to follow suit. Ella & Pitr’s mural acts as a companion piece to the Sola airport control tower, also built by Block Berge Bygg and which was painted by the Polish artist M-City as part of Nuart Festival 2013.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
French based artist collective Ella & Pitr specialise in creating large-scale murals of fairytale-like characters. Their playful and poignant artworks have brought them international acclaim, and can be found on rooftops, runways, houses, shipping containers and even entire fields. Their practice is defined by an innate playfulness and unique style appropriated from influences as diverse as children’s books, comic books and graffiti. As well as producing their trademark murals with prodigious energy the world over, Ella & Pitr have exhibited extensively at art galleries in France and in selected exhibitions internationally.
